Title: Warlike Words

(When stockings were tight)
(True story related by a friend)

Two crabby ladies on a bus
said “Girls today are not like us”
“It`s true, they drink and smoke and swear
their skirts show all their underwear
“They chase the men, they`re full of dope,
their morals are beyond all hope,
no respect and so uncouth
not like we were in our youth.”
“We were ladies, good and kind,
sex just never crossed our minds,
mannerly and shy, not bold,
doing all that we were told.”

***

Behind, a young man sat and heard
their peevish talk, their unkind words.
He`d listened in and had enough,
how could they prate such wretched stuff?
He leaned towards their nodding heads
and quietly to the two he said
“I`ve heard about the war and how
some lovelorn females would allow
special favours to the Yanks
when nylon stockings served as thanks.”
“So have things really changed a lot?
Your blushing faces tell me NOT!”
