I founded several businesses during the eighties and early nineties, sometimes alone, other times with one or more partners. They all succeeded, some small - some large, but always there was a lack of permanence in my feelings regarding commerce. I left each venture seeking something l was unaware of, though feeling good about turning my back on them.
I wrote Angels All within a five day period back in 1997; l'd gone to Spain for the first and last time so was looking to avoid the reality of the surroundings (theme pubs and football shirts everywhere). It took up three exercise books and l was slightly surprised at this when l got back to England. I did not draft it until a few years later (2003).
